Carved cup I was babbling about last entry -- mostly dry greenware at this point.

Alymar's mantle of winter, first try (on me, shot with the timer). Turns out his head is bigger than mine by more than I thought, so I'll be replacing the hood and cutting the neckline a little larger. The new hood will probably be pointy at the back instead of ( Read more... )

Permissions fixed, I think?

I don't like the way greenware feels -- it's this weird unfinished state -- but I'm terribly curious to see how this looks once it's fired and glazed. Vast impatience!

No handle, so it's just a cup and not a mug, I think. I have no idea how I would've made a handle to work with the carving -- something I'm pondering for future attempts.

Oh cool! I like the mug. :-)

It's great you're showing photos now too. I was kind of hoping for pictures of the amazing Root Maze setup and/or your outfit. :-)

I acquired this camera, and now feel obliged to use it.

The root maze setup was not very impressive to look at except inasmuch as it covered a lot of area -- lots of colored strings tied to trees. It was much more amusing once it was full of players.

The costume was not everything I could have wished for -- I kept changing my mind on what I wanted to do, ran low on time, and so went with something relatively quick and simple, which then suffered some in transit. I may try to photograph it after I've done some repairs.

That carved cup is going to be sooooo neat! I'm seeing it in deep brown with orangey-red flames...

Hey, you know what would be cool with the cowl, since you have to do a new hood anyway? Make it a hood with a liripipe, a long point down the back ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liripipe ) , & make the liripipe look like an icicle.

Okay, I'll stop. ^_^ I'm full of ideas today!

The studio has a modest selection of glazes, and the ones for high-fire clay have a limited range of colors. I was thinking to try to get the flames in iron red and the background in mason satin black under iron red. Shino might get me some oranges, but its color varies with thickness (oranges when thin, white when thick) and I'm not good at controlling that yet. I think the one other orange glaze is a very runny one that I haven't experimented with at all yet.

Just trying to make the foreground and background different colors will be the most complicated glazing I've tried yet. :)

Oh yeah, in the description for the hood you were wondering about how to keep the points on the bottom from curling. Two ideas - spray starch and/or hang a bead or fake icicle from each one.

A liripipe as merimask suggested would also be cool.

Oh! Firemountain has lovely ice quartz that would be perfect for that...

Also quartz won't shatter as easily as glass, so it'll last longer.

Sadly, Alymar would kill me -- or at least not wear the mantle -- if I made it sparkly or foppish. Even selling it as a pocket to hide things in did not convince him of a liripipe hood.

Those beads are most nifty, though. I may have to make something else ice themed as an excuse to use them.

Glowsticks! They're not foppish and "glow" <> "sparkly". You can tell him merastra said so! ;-)
