all day today i asked various people what the assembly was and they all said a religious speaker. so i go to the gym and it was a lady, nun, and a young girl with a baby. i start to listen to the story and come to realize this really does not have to do with religion. the speaker talked about the creation of these shelters for pregnant women to live when they have been kicked out of their household or had no where to live to begin with. throughout the speech i just kept getting more and more angry and frustrated not just at the speakers words but at how our society is today that we have to have these shelters. i find it all ridiculous. sex - its two people, they make that decision, therefore they are in it for the long haul if pregnancy does occur. rape is a different story and i'm not going to touch on that. the things that truly boggle me: 1. the way the speaker didnt even touch on that we, freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, should not being having sex. i dont think she even said the word sex. also, education -- she implied that we should finish our highschool education, but she did not say that sex could ruin our education. 2. how this assembly was a christian concerns assembly. i really do not see anything christian about it. isnt celebacy until marriage a core christian belief?.. granted, todays society changed that. thats what drives me insane. how can we talk and these beliefs with christianity and then go against them. its hypocritical. the catholic church is against abortion. i'm fine with that belief, i understand why they would have this belief. how can you be fine with teenage sex, but abortion is bad? to me, this assembly shows how you can make teenage sex apart of this society and how the catholic church will help you out of your hard times. 3. arent families supposed to stick together? something obviously has to be wrong with society if the parents are not teaching their children not to have sex. and even if they do, why would you put your child out on the street? society wouldnt be faced with these problems if people were instilled with the right education at an early age. 4. my school is all about empowering young women. however when a girl gets in a relationship with a guy its a two person decision to have sex. yet, when a girl is pregnant and goes to a shelter the guy only has to pay child support. for some reason i feel like the catholic church puts so much pressure on abortion and pregnancy but doesnt put enough pressure on guys. :/ 5. i dont really believe that these shelters provide anything but really shelter. the speaker talked about these guidance and chastitity classes. why are they having these classes after the fact? why arent these classes in todays school system? this society just drives me insane. 6. about a year ago i really became aware of teenage sex. like 14 year olds having sex and i'm as boggled as i am now. at 14 how can you have any sexual urges that lead to sex?! its like the popular thing to do these days which drives me insane. man, i could really go on forever, but it all just seems to be going in a circle. gahh...
