That's a whole different story. If I offer someone something, I really want them to partake in happiness that I have to offer. Unless it's like of those where you feel obligated to offer because someone is whinning about how much they want something but not actually asking you for it --basically the same thing.
If someone is pulling out a pack of gum and turns to me and says, "Do you want a piece?" and I do want a piece... well hmm. Depends on what that something is. Most likely I'm not going to take it. Unless I really want it and there is a lot left--piece of gum, potato chips, all fine. But not like "Hey, do you want my last piece of chocolate from Holland that my grandma gave me before she died?" I'd turn that down in a hot second. Yes, so thinking about your question has made me more aware of my hubrius--if offered I should just take something right? But I often decline out of "politeness."
I can understand this. I am many times faced with things being offered to me that I may want but may not necessarily need. I'm much more uncomfortable with accepting proffered monetary donations than food items...but I think a lot of people are.
