Yeah, huge pop culture hits become every day references and are then woven into our subconcious and culture. It has always been this way. So yeah, you'll probably miss something.
But a high and mighty stance the author has about Harry Potter seems ridiculous. Anyone who has read LOTR, or loves Sci-Fi, Star Wars, Star Trek, any of the other "star" somthings, watches American Idol, watches reality tv, yadda yadda basically can expect these topics to pop up later on in tv or jokes or conversation. No one should hold up one over the other. Harry Potter got kids who didn't read into reading. That itself is awesome. And yes, I love Harry Potter and no I don't think the last books were for 13 year olds.
Oh god no! I'd have been scared out of my pants and wouldn't have slept for a week if I read those books at 13! After living with Anna though, I can totally see how some people really just are ok with ignoring pop culture and going on their merry way.
