I switched from BofA to BECU a couple years ago and could not be happier. The ATMs aren't as convenient, but I have one in my work neighborhood and one co-op machine by my house. I'm pretty sure you can go to any credit union too and not pay any fees. I'm still trying to get my husband to switch over, but it's just laziness that prevents him. Do it! You won't regret it!
I kind of feel like a sucker for staying with Wells Fargo for all this time, but I've never really had any trouble with them and the inconvenience of switching everything over to a credit union just to make a tiny point remains too daunting. But in general, yay to credit unions and co-ops.
Do you use mint? According to them, Wells Fargo has been charging us a load of fees every year. While I have always been happy with their customer service (everyone at the branch I use knows me), the fees are pretty wild. But all that said about fees, a few years ago someone stole my card and made off with $1500- and WF put the money back into my account with almost no questions asked. I'm wondering I BECU can offer me the same protection. The whole ATM thing doesn't worry me so much because I always have cash from working.
As for making points- I've been feeling more excited about these protests (for the first few weeks, I was just feeling cynical). Between work and Niko I don't really have time to make any point save for this. I sort of feel like it's the very least I can do to show solidarity.
I don't use Mint, but I'm pretty sure that I'm not being charged any annual fees. That's weird! Do you have some sort of accounts with minimum balances?
Overall, though, it does seem like you'd benefit by bundling your finances into one institution. I know that some banks (like WF) give you perks for doing that.
Just fyi, when I switched to BECU, I opened the account all online. Then I went down to a branch, wrote a check from my BofA account to my new BECU account for the remaining balance and called BofA to cancel when the check cleared.
