Well, I just want to let anyone who cares.. which .. probably isn't everyone.. that we have a cyclone hanging around off the coast and I may dissapear from the net for a bit if it hits.
More info under the cut.
It's a category 3 cyclone that has been intensifying and heading west. It keeps dropping to the south a bit. As you can see from the below tracking map there is a possibility it may cross just above us or on us or way above us. Who knows.
I'm in Mackay.. so we are at the bottom of the warning region (in orange).. but who knows what will happen. Thes things are unpredictable i guess.
I'm off to buy batteries and fill water bottles :|
Update: 1pm, Sunday 19th March.
Cyclone has been upgraded to category 4 now. Still is heading west, so still above us.. but we will get some rain from the edge of it.
Update: 1.34am, Monday 20th March
As you can see.. its pretty much gonna miss here in Mackay. They are predicting that we are gonna get some nasty winds from it thought. About 120km/hr gusts. (Thats 74.56 miles per hour)
From this site:
Beaureu of Meterology The VERY DESTRUCTIVE CORE of SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE LARRY with extreme gusts up to 280 km/hr (173.98 miles per hour) should cross the coast between INNISFAIL and MISSION BEACH between 7am and 9am MONDAY MORNING.
We are safe.. but those that are up a bit further north are in for a bit of a nasty time :(
Heres some pics that Peter took today at the beach just around the corner from our place
The view from the lookout back over towards some houses.
From the same lookout .. this time out towards the ocean.
My kids trying to brave a bit of a 'toes in' dip in the water. But somehow i don't think Alex was too impressed. hehe
Update: 8.53am, Monday 20th March.
Well, cyclone Larry is currently crossing the coast in Innisifail. Innisfail is way further north than us really, so as i said earlier this moring it totally missed us. It crossed the coast as a category 5. Has had some devastating effects. They are about to get the back end of the cyclone pass through. There is another cyclone forming off the coast too.. Cyclone Wattie. Its still a fair way off but is a bit further south than Larry. So it may not be all over yet. Ahhh! the pleasure of living in the tropics.
