Fannish Things

Mar 09, 2014 12:43

I find that my fannish activities tend to go in cycles -- sometimes I read fic like mad; sometimes the only things I read are fics that are posted during my days as quibbler_report editor. Sometimes I get into a reccing frenzy and sign up for all sorts of categories at crack_broom; sometimes I can barely come up with one story/art to rec for my weekly stint at one_bad_man. Sometimes I regularly check out the offerings at FFN and Petulant Poetess; sometimes a month will pass when I don't even visit those sites.

But lately I've been drifting back to FFN, and I'm glad I did, because recently, among the usual FFN dreck, I've found two gems:

Fannish Thing One: Two Fic Recs:

An Agreement by Spoonsoftea. Minerva/Albus, 1200 words

As I told the author in my review, I'm usually not comfortable with stories where a strong woman (or any woman) willingly makes it her life's work to support a "great man." But here, the trope is interestingly changed: Minerva takes the initiative to propose a "mutually beneficial relationship" without sacrificing her independence.

For Those In Peril by tofsla. Minerva/Poppy, 1340 words

I really like this author's take on Minerva -- pragmatic, with just the right amount of cynicism (or wisdom, depending on your definition. Or both.) And there's that believable irritation, too, which is IC in ways that make good sense for Minerva. She's a woman who's great in a crisis but finds the down-time, the waiting, to be more difficult than the action. The rather disjointed style works really well here.

(Sadly, the fic has only one FFN review -- mine.)

Fannish Thing Two: Crack_Broom

I'm serving as the Rarest Reccer this month at crack_broom. So hop on over there; I've got some fun rarepairs to share. Also, consider signing up for a reccing category if you are so inclined.

Fannish Thing Three: McGonagall Art

Here are a couple of pieces of McGonagall art to brighten your Saturday:

McG Art #1, by in-a-rowboat

McG Art #2 by dilraj gahunia
