The chronological feed does exist and most people use it like that but it's hidden in settings; there's an option called Best Stuff First! in settings>dashboard preferences (or similar). One you toggle it off your dashboard should become a chronological feed of everyone you follow.
It's generally helpful to go through those settings. For example I've turned endless scrolling off/pagination on which means my browser on my old computer gets less overwhelmed and I don't lose my place.
Also re what your blog is. It's every original post you make (as your journal would be here) but there's also reblogs which don't exist in quite the same way outside tumblr. So for example one could never make an original post or even add to reblogs and still be a coherent tumblr with followers. Essentially like a curator/aggregator feed. This can be themed, but for people who don't care about followers or being popular it might just be a curation of stuff they've personally liked. Tags can be for added for categorisation or comments. You can also reblog and add your own take, expand or disagree on an existing post. This is how "discourse" (wank) posts may look but also just long joke chains or people telling related stories or people adding memes/reaction images/context.
