Life Stuff and a Rec

Wow, dears, it's been eons! Eons, I tell you. I have much to whine about report.

Let's start on a high note: Podficcer Wilfriede has made a simply marvelous podfic of my Wilhelmina/Aberforth story, "Flying Dutchman". I'm really chuffed about this because a) it is beautifully read and illustrated, and b) this fic (with its marginal-characters rare ( Read more... )

That's lovely about the podfic! I'll give it a listen.

I'm sorry you're dealing with health issues. Hope things get better soon.

I totally understand about not having the psychic energy to do much, even good stuff like reading. Hugs.

The US is a scary-ass place right now. We're looking at colleges for my youngest, who is queer, and the list of places we'd feel safe sending them is rapidly dwindling.

I sympathize with your concerns about where to send a queer student to college. Even when campuses are welcoming, the surrounding area often very much isn't.

I also read recently about several red states working to make it difficult for college students to do absentee ballots, so that's another thing to consider. (The rule in Tennessee, for instance, is that one cannot use an absentee ballot if it's the first time they ever voted -- a status that applies to probably 90% of traditional-aged college freshman. So it's a perfect way to disenfranchise thousands of people who are likely to vote against Republicans.)

Just, ugh. I wonder what possible legal rationale they can give for banning absentee voting.

Oh, the usual pious lie -- "to preserve democracy, we must protect against [nonexistent] voter fraud."

The world is a bloody mess all right. It's quite demoralizing. Just for "fun" I reread The Handmaid's Tale (I haven't watched the tv series), having read it the first time about 12 years ago...? and wow it's no longer a far-fetched idea.

I am delighted you'll get to do a bit of traveling!! I'd love to do some myself but as long as I am going to insist on being unemployed I will have to stay home. :P

These days, The Handmaid's Tale reads like non-fiction.

I'm looking forward to the travel. It's been four years since I was on a plane. . .
