How old is your Mac? It's likely that you do need update the operating system, and then run a bunch of updates on other applications and software. I've got a mac that's about 5 years old and it still runs great, but I've updated the software and memory on it to keep it fast enough to run newer software. Sometimes, just a nice fresh, clean install will return your computer to a like-new state. If you don't want to try fixing it yourself, you can take it to the Genius Bar at a Mac store and have them fix it for you. It won't be free, but it'll be cheaper than a new computer ( ... )

Its a 10.3.9 I got it in 2004. So its about 5 yrs old. It was doing great. Then over the last six months everything just started not working properly. I updated software. I dont even know how to do what I need to do to fix it. I wonder if they would give me a quote on what it costs to fix my computer before I get stuck with a huge bill.

I really want to stick with a mac. After watching my mom have a dell crash on her 4 times in one year. I'm not so into the idea. I just was thinking of getting a whole new computer... maybe a mac notebook or notebook pro? I dont know.
but if you think this one can be fixed I shouldnt spend more than I have to.

It think it's definitely worth taking to the Genius Bar at the Mac store and seeing if they think they can fix it for a reasonable amount. It might just need a system update and some memory. If it does turn out to be shot, then at least you're in the store and can look at new computers.

I've got a Macbook Pro that's about a year old and I really like it. The drawback to laptops though is that their batteries tend to burn out and won't hold a change after a while. There are things you can do to recalibrate them or keep them going longer, but in the end, it's a rechargeable battery and so it does have a max number of times it can be drained and recharged. So factor in the cost of replacing the battery every couple of years with the laptop (currently about $130). The iMacs and Mac Minis are great too.

Oh, forgot to mention - your system is definitely out of date and is likely the problem. They are currently at 10.6 and there have been a lot of changes since 10.3.9. It's a good idea to periodically upgrade your OS every couple of years. All the other dependent apps and software start needing the new system in order to run properly, which it sound like you might be running up against.

coming from someone who worked for Apple: if you're on 10.3.09 (tiger?) you DEFINITELY need to update to at least Leopard, if now Snow ( ... )
