Prequel to Interlude in Los Angeles

Arms outstretched, palms flat against the ground, she felt the soil beneath her fingers. The grass tickled her bare feet and she inhaled deeply. The air smelled heavy and wet, a storm was coming. Eyes closed, she tried to absorb as much of her surroundings as she could. As she had been taught.

Become one with the island.

The night was dark and unforgiving. Beautiful. The stars overhead, watching but never speaking. The only witnesses to this scene.

She could hear someone coming up behind her, no matter how quiet he was. She turned around and opened her eyes, shining with a new kind of sparkle. Something he had only seen once. He smiled when he thought of it, felt her skin against his own as if she was touching him now, while she was really standing ten feet away. He could feel the warmth flowing to his lower belly, but he had to focus now. No time for games tonight.

"Ready?"

His voice was as soft as ever, but it seemed loud in the darkness of the jungle with just the two of them there and no other sound except the wind that played with their hair.

A nod.

"You?"

"I am always ready, Alex." He winked at her, his eyes deep, asking her to come closer without using words.

"You should know that by now."

She approached him then, letting him put his arms around her slender body. She was twenty-one now and she was leaving the island for the first time. She would return within one month, but it was enough for her.

She felt his hands slipping underneath her shirt, his hands warm against her cool skin. Felt him smile as she pressed her lips gently against his. His lips were so wonderfully soft and warm, always, and she knew how to drive her crazy, how to keep him longing for more. He might be as old as the island itself and just when he thought he'd seen it all, Alex was there to prove him wrong.

Their tongues slid into each other's mouth, slow and gentle, the rumble of thunder already in the air. The first raindrop landed on Alex' shoulder and she knew it would be pouring soon. They had to go. Reluctantly, she slipped her hands from around Richard's neck and gave him a quick kiss on his lips before walking towards the submarine. She looked around once more, before going down the steps, her eyes taking in the rocks, the sea, the trees and hills of the island, the beach with its sand like silver under the light of countless stars and the full moon.

Richard came down directly after her, his smile reassuring her there was nothing to be afraid of. She knew what would happen and he would be with her every step of the way.

"Will you show me everything?" she asked him, when they sat down on their beds.

"I won't have enough time to show you everything I want to show you, but I'll show you as much as I can."

She smiled, a little anxious still.

"Okay then."

As she felt the submarine starting to move, she switched beds and lay down next to him. His hand was warm on her lower back as he pulled her closer to him. Her head was on his chest and his heartbeat lulled her to sleep.

Richard knew how excited Alex was to see the real world, but however much she had suffered on the island, he knew she would want to go back to the island no matter what. The real world wasn't meant for them, children of the island.

This was, after all, home.
