The lights dazzled, blinded, the stink of sweat, coffee, the hot sun beating down on the city overpowering her sense of smell and the noise of the honking cars, screaming people and music deafening compared to the stillness of the jungle. The buildings reached high into the sky, seemed as if they could touch the clouds. She felt closed in, alone, isolated amongst the neverending flow of people.
Alex couldn't choose what to do next, so she let Richard choose for her.
He took her shopping for clothes.
"You're a woman now," he said before leaving her to try on jeans, shirts and dresses in colours she had never seen before. She stood in front of the mirror in the cramped fitting room, staring at a girl she didn't seem to know, but yet had something familiar about her.
Richard's eyes were as black as she'd ever seen them when she witdrew the curtain that seperated them and she showed him the clothes. She knew the smile that appeared on his lips.
"You look beautiful."
She suddenly felt hot, caged, found herself longing for open fields and a place to escape. There was nowhere to escape here. There was always someone, something and she didn't understand the city's streets and buildings and most of all, she didn't understand the people.
Richard bought her everything she liked. He watched her eyes widen every time they rounded a corner, watched her surprise grow with every new discovery. But he also saw her controlled fear, her insecurity, heard her heart beating faster when she came to realise she would never fit in here, even if she tried. He pulled her closer to him whenever she squeezed his hand a little harder.
He took her to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. They walked around until closing time, but even then Alex still hadn't had enough. Her exhilliration at these new discoveries, her innocence, her will to see as much of the real world as she could refreshed Richard. It made him feel younger, much like the island looked refreshed after each storm.
He made her forget this wasn't their world, she made him forget himself.
At night, he took her to see the ocean. But even then they were not alone. Other people were taking midnight walks on the beach, talking in hushed voiced that still carried over the black water. The stars overhead were invisible, replaced by the lights of the city behind them. The waves broke on the beach and it was the sound that brought her back to the island. She felt Richard's hand slip to her waist, pulling her close and she know he felt the same.
"Do you want to go home?" he asked her after a few minutes.
"No, it's just... So much to take in. It's only two more weeks."
She smiled at him, looking into his eyes, deeper than the last time she'd looked.
"Let's go back to the hotel."
He nodded then, guiding her back towards their only place of peace amidst the wilderness of the city.
