He was second-in-command.
He was not their leader.

He was protector of the island, he did what he had to.
(Though he could never repay the island for what it had given him.)
He was closer to the island - one entity - than Ben could ever understand.
Ben, however, would be their past. Locke their future.
"You do remember birthdays, don't you, Richard?"
He did not laugh at the joke, Ben's mindgames tired him. He did not want to make a fuss today. Richard had a job to do.

A/N; The scene from "Through The Looking Glass" where this was inspired by, gave me another idea for a drabble. I used a 100 words for this one as well, just because it's fun to challenge yourself like that.
“Don't make a fuss,” he'd told her.
As if leaving the only person she loved - the only person that loved her - was easy.
Richard knew it wasn't, he'd lost so many.
He knew it kept hurting, although the hurt changed. He knew things ended and he knew nothing was forever - except perhaps himself - and he knew the only thing to do was enjoy every day as if it was your last.
But Richard had lived for over a hundred years, Alex was still so very young. In time, she would come to discover it herself.
