It occurred to me today that emoticons are the equivalent of a laugh track. A laugh track played by some asshole who thinks everything he says is funny, but you're too stupid to get that it's funny, so you need to be told. And by "some asshole," I mean you. And me. On my own part, I know I do it because I've previously taken crap and/or walked into firefights because I've "said" thinks over the 'Net that other people simply couldn't tell were...shall we say in jest? Or Not So Serious As They Appeared? I use the wink because, essentially, it's just the easiest way I've yet found for getting across "my opinion, you mileage may vary, someone believing different things does not need to be scary and/or mean that I hate and negate you for also believing different things" thus far. You know?
Though it certainly can become a crutch, like anything else.
