I agree that there's a very intense visual image while reading about the pandemic. The entire time I was reading it I felt extremely emotional. Though I believe that this lecture was meant to bring awareness to essentially everyone around the world, I agree that there's also a purpose of inspiration and persuasion to the wealthier parts of the planet who have the power and resources to help make a difference. The passion that Stephen Lewis has for Africa I believe is more so affected by the amazing people he met and all of his life changing experiences. How his life was growing up I'm not sure has much to do with his passion, though it is a possibility I haven't considered.
I think you pretty much nailed it with the idea of him trying to raise awareness of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. In regards to his childhood, it touches on it briefly that he went to college and it didn't work out for him. I think the fact that he tried to a post-secondary education and failed, yet still went on to try and change the world is great. It really shows that he is both a dedicated and heartfelt person.
