Be sure to check the Humane Society before you buy a pet, they sometimes have rats and guinea pigs (which is where we got Muffin, over 6 years ago).

If you go with a rat, get an aquarium and a good wire lid that nests over it, and a really big rock. That's the only way my rats never got loose. I can help you with the setup if you need.

i have a rat (used to have two but one got sick) and if youre thinking of getting rats (which is very rewarding), YOU MUST GET TWO cuz they are very social and get depressed and messed up in the head if theyre alone all the time. im getting another one soon. it would be a great idea to get a book on the subject. id get two males cuz males bond with you more and are more receptive to petting and arent so wound up (so ive heard - i have a female). if you have any questions feel free to hit me up. whatever you do, you need to get only rats of the same sex.

oh yeah i forgot the most important part. never ever ever buy an animal from a pet store, only from a breeder. pet store rats are not well bred and are much more likely to have diseases than ones bred by serious breeders. ive bought three rats from petsmart and two of them happened to have myco (a respiratory disease some rats have).
