No. WAY.

I knew there was no way that the Veronica Mars finale would be that great--the episodes that preceded it were nothing much, and the writers were unprepared for cancellation, blah blah...I know every geeky detail. But that is NO excuse for the transcendent disappointment that this finale was. I can't remember ever being so disappointed by a finale, ( Read more... )

Heh. I haven't watched any of this season since the first arc. Should I bother when it's out on DVD?

Not if you ask me. Every bit of it from that point on is a waste of time.

Well then, I guess I won't bother with it. I was thinking of getting the DVDs from the library, but maybe I'll get Alias instead.

(Remember how we're not buying anything this year? Well, I think I will have to get the 3rd season of House when it comes out. I haven't watched it at all, because I wanted to see it in sequence on the DVDs and I know I can't commit to an evening of TV a week, and originally I thought I could wait, but I'm scared of spoilers...)

The first season of Veronica Mars is some of the most worthwhile TV you'll ever see. It's a mystery, and the mystery is solved at the end, so it's completely self-contained. In fact, I think the problem with the show is that it worked so well for one season--trying to continue after the mystery was solved was stretching it.

Exactly. Twin Peaks has the same issue, except that in some ways it's worse for VM--not only was that mystery the plot for the entire first season, but it informed all the character relationships. They tried to hit the ground running second season but without that backstory it just didn't hang together as well.

And third season had the added obstacle of the dreaded high-school-to-college leap. Few shows have survived that well.

Sorry to hear it. We haven't had time to watch the finale yet--perhaps this weekend. Once we do I'll let you know what I thought. So far, though, I'd have to say that Lost has the award for worst finale this year, hands down.

Television is inevitably disappointing. Heroes turned out well in one season. I doubt they'll keep that momentum. BSG jumped after the first season, as well.
