Brienne of Tarth

The main criticism I see levied at Brienne is that she is simply a character with no characteristics or qualities of her own.  She is seen as being a plot device for ‘more important characters’.   Others complain that she was just thrown into the story to satisfy feminist readers. I think both arguments are terribly unfair and completely overlook ( Read more... )

I am very excited to meet this character when I progress over to A Clash of Kings. I'm pleased with this entry. :) I'll return to it after I meet her.

Brienne is amazing, but you should stay away from my posts on her until you are caught up on the series ;)

Here here! Also she does have the characteristics of being brutally blunt with herself- someone who has given up on finding someone to love her, like Eowyn from LOTR. These things are actually freeing to a woman of her status.

And BTW, has GRRM ever done ANYTHING close to bending to pressure from anyone?

thanks for posting! :)

I really hate that GRRM makes her even uglier throughout the series, especially with Biter. Sometimes I just think he is too cruel to these characters. I also wonder if she can still be saved :(

I cant wait either, there have been a couple pics of Gwendoline Christie the actress who plays her on twitter lately, and I really love how they cut her hair for the role. I can't wait to see her in costume!! I hope we get the whole series but of course that means GRRM has to finish it :p

Fantastic post. I love the quote that you used to show her strength. I think that even while Cat is pitying her, she's also admiring her. Cat is helpless to save her daughters who are undervalued as collateral for Jaime Lannister (though in Cat's mind they are of equal value to a man prisoner) and here is this woman who stubbornly fights in the world of men that Cat can't fight in. She can't carve out a path to her daughters but... here's this woman who can. I just love the interaction between those two characters. I think Cat is truly empowered by Brienne ( ... )
