So where do you all find the userpics you use?  And how do you know that they are safe to download onto your computer?

Many of mine are pics I've taken myself or others have taken of me. Most of the others are from comic strips I enjoy (Sinfest, Hothead Paisan, Calvin and Hobbes, xkcd).

Anyway, pictures are never dangerous to download to your computer; they are not executable files so they can't do you any harm. I use Google images to find what I'm looking for. Although more often I just stumble across something and think -- that would make a great icon!

I couldn't even put my photo that you took onto this site. It has to be 100x100, and LJ said it had too many pixels. Is there a conversion program that I should know about, or...?

I used The Gimp to resize mine. Unfortunately, "user friendly" is not in its dictionary. (Or at least I don't think the right way for it.) But it's Free, and that's kinda important to me.
