when i needed new glasses/prescription, i went to mass. eye and ear for a checkup; it's walkable, takes BCBS, and i trust them to be not overly expensive. i did get frames from MIT optical in the student center, they have a (10-15%?) discount for students.

That's quite a lifetime for frames... RIP.

I got an eye exam at the Med Center a long time ago; it wasn't especially memorable, which means they couldn't have been too bad. That might be the easiest place.

More recently I went to MEEI (Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary). It took a week or two to get an appointment, but they have a reputation as one of the best hospitals in the world for their specialties.

For new frames, MIT Optical is convenient, and the guy who runs it is really good (I'm pretty sure I've still seen him around w20 recently).

I was also wandering through Costco last week and looked at their optical department. They seem to have really good prices on both frames and lenses, though the selection is a bit limited.
