A MODERN MYTH
by: lina (osakaromanesque)
genre: AU. futuristic-ish. mythical/mystical.
summary: Two men hold the power to save the world from an unknown evil, only if they joined their powers. But what happens when both men are sworn enemies? Two fates, two destinies intertwine. They will soon find out what it’s like when worlds collide.

When Hiroki stepped into the Ohkura home, Tadayoshi was holding his mother close. Her blood stained his sweater as he cried holding her in his arms. He kept on calling her but she wouldn’t wake up. Of course. This was obvious. Hiroki couldn’t bear watching Tadayoshi in so much emotional pain.

He looked away and opened Tadayoshi’s closet. He grabbed a nearby bag and pulled Tadayoshi’s clothes out of the closet. He stuffed the clothes into the bag.

“We have to get you out of here. Someone is obviously after you,” said Hiroki as he packed Tadayoshi’s clothes.

“He did this, didn’t he?” Tadayoshi muttered.

Hiroki was hoping that Tadayoshi wouldn’t figure it out too soon. But it was obvious who was behind his family’s killing. That had to mean that the same person knew that they were using gypsy tricks during the match. That was the only valid reason.

“Let’s just get you out here first. We’ll go back to the hideout-“

“I’m gonna kill him.”

“You don’t have to worry about that right now, Tada-“

“I’m gonna kill him!” His eyes turned red and his arms turned into flames.

“Tadayoshi-kun, stop! You’ll burn her!” Hiroki shouted.

“I will kill that little runt!” He was crying.

Hiroki dropped the bag and went to Tadayoshi. He placed his hands on Tadayoshi’s arm, attempting to pry his arms away from Manatsu.

“Tadayoshi, please! You’ll burn her!” Hiroki begged in tears. “Calm down, please!”

Ryo, Shingo and Shota ran into the home. Hiroki looked up at Shingo, as if telling him to help calm Tadayoshi down. Shingo tried pulling Tadayoshi away but failed. Hiroki’s hands were already burnt and bled from the fire.

“Get away from him,” Ryo told Hiroki and Shingo. They did as they were told. “Sorry, man. I gotta do this.”

Ryo pulled his right leg back and gave Tadayoshi a swift kick at the face - right smack at the cheek. Tadayoshi instantly lost consciousness, the flame from his arms disappeared. Ryo began hopping around with his right leg up.

“Shit, is his face made out of concrete?” Ryo cursed.

Shingo took a look at Hiroki’s bleeding hands. Hiroki was in tears.

“Let’s just wash the blood off first. I’ll treat you when we get back to the hideout.” Shingo helped Hiroki up. “Shota-san, get Tadayoshi-san’s bag and Ryo, you help the boy you just kicked up. We need to leave now.”

Tadayoshi woke up to something cold touching his cheek. He remembered going home but he looked around and realized that he wasn’t at home. He was at the hideout again. Shota held a bag of ice to his cheek, which apparently was bruised. He didn’t remember obtaining said bruise.

“Oh, you’re awake,” said Shota, smiling weakly. “That’s good…”

Tadayoshi sat up and saw Shingo wrapping Hiroki’s hands.

“What happened to Hiro?” Tadayoshi asked. “His hands…”

“You don’t remember?”

“Remember what?”

“At home, you… You were, well, in flames. Hiro-chan tried to snap you out of it and he touched you and hurt himself.”

Tadayoshi covered his face with his hand and shook his head. “Oh god…”

“I’m alright, Tadayoshi-kun,” said Hiroki, with that same wide smile on his face. “You don’t have to worr-OW!”

Shingo scowled. “Stop moving! Jeez, you’re no better than Mr. Conceited over there.”

“Shingo, shut up. Stop calling me that,” said Ryo.

“Well, whatever it is, I think it’s best that all of us get some rest. It’s been a long day,” said Shingo. “Unfortunately, someone will have to sleep on the living room couch. We only have two rooms and they only fit two people each.”

Shota stood up with his hand high up in the air. “I’ll take the couch!”

“Then Ryo and Tadayoshi-san will share a room,” said Shingo.

“I-What?! Wait. Can’t Ryo sleep in a room with you and I’ll share a room with Hiro or Yasu or something?” Tadayoshi tried to protest.

Hiroki shot Tadayoshi a dirty glare. It took him quite a while to understand where Hiroki was getting at.

“Then I’ll sleep on the couch,” Tadayoshi suggested.

“No, no, no. You and Ryo-san have a lot to discuss about. Saving the world and all,” said Shota. “I’ll be alright on the couch.”

What Shingo and Hiroki forgot to mention to both Ryo and Tadayoshi was the guest room only had one bed and the two of them were supposed to share. Neither wanted to sleep on the floor. They ended up sleeping on the same bed with their backs facing each other.

Ryo couldn’t sleep - he worried about his sister and everything that happened that day. Shingo told him to not worry about Nozomi. He had someone looking after her from afar, he told Ryo. But as a brother, Ryo couldn’t help but worry.

“Can’t sleep?” Tadayoshi asked.

“Not really. You?”

“Are you kidding? How can I sleep?”

“I guess you’re right.”

“What do you think?”

“About?”

“This whole thing.”

“Ridiculous.”

“Figures.”

“You?”

“Same.”

Silence.

“You know,” Ryo broke the silence. “Ever since I saw you at the arena that night, the area right below my right shoulder burned.”

“Burned?”

“Well it didn’t burn per se, but there was a burning sensation. It stung like hell.”

“I won’t lie and say I didn’t feel the same.”

“Do you know what it is though? Because I have no fucking clue what it is.”

“It’s the mark.”

“Mark?”

Tadayoshi sat up and pushed away the covers. His back was still facing Ryo. Ryo turned around and watched as Tadayoshi took off his shirt. Just below his right shoulder was a birthmark. The scar tissue made a shape of the white area of the Yin Yang symbol, much like the pendant Ryo had. Tadayoshi took off his necklace and handed it to Ryo.

“Put it next to the mark. Then you’ll see,” Tadayoshi told him.

Ryo did what Tadayoshi told him to do. “Ah. A complete symbol.”

“My family had this. I’m the third generation. I’m guessing you’re the third generation too.”

“Have you always known about this?”

Hesitantly, Tadayoshi nodded. “I didn’t want to believe it. I don’t want anything to do with this thing. I wanted to live a life with as little drama and trouble as possible. My father died in the war, fighting a meaningless battle.”

“But it was a clan war. Our fathers and brothers fought for our territory.”

“Of course you can say that. You’re living in the rich part of the city. We don’t have that. Everyday my people die from radioactive exposure. We can’t afford doctors. You have no idea what it’s like. I thought if I just ignore the fact that I’m born this way, I could live a little longer and my family would still be alive.”

Ryo listened to Tadayoshi’s tale. It was true that Ryo had no idea what went on at the South side of the city. He never realized how hard it was to live with so little but when he met Tadayoshi, Hiroki and Shota, they were living proof that life was possible in a rundown city.

Maybe just a little, just a little, Ryo could understand how Tadayoshi felt.

“Sorry. I forgot that you don’t care,” said Tadayoshi.

His back looked a little lonely.

“Turn around,” said Ryo.

“What?”

“Shh. Just do it.”

Tadayoshi turned around and sat cross-legged on the bed. Ryo got up and sat cross-legged opposite Tadayoshi. He took off his bracelet. He held up both sides of the symbol in front of him.

“This is a wild theory okay?” said Ryo. “Let’s just say we stop the sun from dying, right, there might be a chance of North Tox and South Tox becoming one city. No more clan wars and gang fights.”

“Okay… I don’t see where you’re getting at.”

“You’re sick of the clan wars right? Claiming the lives of so many people we all love and care. I mean, you’re not the only one who lost people in the war. I lost two older brothers. And my dad lost a leg.”

“I-I’m sorry…”

“So I guess like it or not, we’ll have to do this right? Because it’s our destiny. We’re born to do this. You know everything there is to know about this whole prophecy crap right?”

“Pretty much, yes.”

“All we have to do is combine our powers, right, and Shingo and Hiroki-san can do their voodoo magic on us or whatever ritual we have to go through.”

“We’ll save the sun.”

“We’ll save our people.”

Ryo brought both their pendants together and it glowed in his hands. Ryo stared at it wide-eyed, amazed at what he was seeing. His mouth gaped open and a small ‘awesome’ escaped his mouth. Tadayoshi brought both his hands up and gripped Ryo’s hands, the pendants glowed inside. Tadayoshi hung his head low and closed his eyes. Ryo did the same.

The small area on his back stung slightly but he didn’t flinch.

“Tadayoshi.” It was the first time Ryo called Tadayoshi by his name.

“Yeah?”

“Let’s save the world.”

“That’s the corniest thing I’ve heard from you to date.”

“Don’t ruin it.”

“Fine, fine. We’ll save the world.” Tadayoshi opened his eyes and smiled. Around both their hands were small swirls of fire and water ‘dancing’ together. “It’s beautiful…”

Ryo opened his eyes and saw the same thing. “It is, isn’t it?”
