Just let loose in your sketchbook. Half my sketchbook/drawings on scrappy papers are random loose nonsense, and then i try to apply that to my finished drawings once i get comfortable with practicing uh loose stuff! HAHA, that came out weird.
As for toning, are you talking about just say, cel-shading toning, or screentoning (little dots etc)?
Screentoning, I think. Whatever baddassery it is you've been doing in your U.L. pictures and what people do for shading black and white comics and stuff. I think it had something to do with messing with pixelization but it's never come out quite right for me.
Thanks for the advice! I try most of the time but sometimes I get anal retentive and chuck stuff or hide it away where it will never be seen ever again.
my style of toning: I use the polygon tool to select the areas that I want to shade and then get the gradient filler thing with the darker color and swipe the area with that.
not sure if you meant the little dots, stripes or what what.
