To catch a wave, you'll need to start from the beginning and swim against the many waves, which will try to push you back, then wait for the opportune wave and then try to get on it successfuly...

... I guess what I'm saying is, even if you let it pass, it won't make it any easier. Ride out into the deeper parts and catch a crest while it's still young.
