Rejected journal post.

Jan 29, 2009 10:06

Does anyone else ever spend all night thinking of a LJ post they would like to make, and then spend several minutes typing it up, only to give up on it at the last second and erase the whole thing?  I swear I do this more often than I'd like to admit.  I had a nice, long post all worked out here, detailing the many ways the movie and television ( Read more... )

I kind of figured most people do, I just wasn't sure if anyone did it nearly as often as I do. I've probably erased more finished journal entries than I've ever posted.

Yeah, I guess it was more of a rhetorical question than anything. I kind of figured most people have probably done this at least once.

Sounds like an interesting opinion. I would have read it. Especially in light of the fact that I have recently started growing my own.

Certainly if a villainous character will have more propensity to have facial hair more than the clean-cut hero EXCEPT if we're talking Anime when the ultimately evil guys are these Adonis-like figures of questionable gender. :)

Eh, it wasn't really all that interesting. Mostly it was just a commentary on the cliche of having characters grow a five o'clock shadow whenever they're depressed or angry, like Cyclops in the third X-Men movie. It just always strikes me as silly and over the top, like the writers and director don't trust the actor to convey the emotion necessary for the scene.

Of course I also had to explain the difference between "depressed stubble" and the "action hero stubble" sported by Indiana Jones, Jack Bauer, and the cast of Lost. And no discussion of facial hair cliches would be complete without an (dis)honorable mention for the classic "mustache twirling villain" cliche.

Facial hair does seem to get used a lot as an emo crutch in such things. XD Joker had no facial hair.

Well, the post was mostly going to be about how annoyed I am by what I call the "depressed five o'clock shadow" cliche. That's my term for the clean shaved leading man who suddenly pops up a fresh set of chin stubble to show us how torn up he is about losing his job/girlfriend/wife/family. As I told Brokken, it's like the writers and director don't trust the actor to convey the necessary emotion, so they slap a little visual clue on his face so we know how he's feeling.

Yeah, you know. Evil twins have goatees, the devil has a pointy devil beard, villains have handlebar mustaches, depressed and/or rugged guys have a five o'clock shadow, etc., etc.

Well, that's probably the closest thing to a goatee that you can get on a robot. :P
