Hmmm... I wish that quote site would mention WHERE as well as who the quote comes from. Is it from the mouth of a Character? Or in one of his letters?

Great quote nonetheless, and apropos of a man who suffered through the trench warfare of WWI.

One that I like is from the Silmarillion, about how the Sindarian Elves didn't use writing for the keeping of records much, before war was upon them:

"... of bliss and glad life there is little to be said, before it ends; as works fair and wonderful, while still they endure for eyes to see, are their own record, and only when they are in peril or broken forever do they pass into song."
