1. I don't know much about housing. I live in Kent's on campus family/grad student housing. Hopefully someone else can chime in about that.
2. There's the Kent Stage in downtown Kent. I saw Lisa Loeb there last summer and I know they've always got something going on there. Downtown Kent is pretty nice. There are a lot of nice bars/restaurants to check out. Cleveland is only an hour away and there's ALWAYS something happening in Cleveland.
3. There's no bike lanes around, but I see a lot of people biking to and from campus. There's also PARTA (the local bus system) and the Kent State bus system. Definitely check those out. You can try to find a place that's on the bus route. The bus also goes to local grocery stores, too.
4. Honestly? There's no way to be prepared for winter here. Haha. It's cold as hell. Buy the warmest winter coat you can find, a hat, and some gloves. You're really going to need another mode of transportation in the winter, as biking in snow is pretty much impossible.
As far as I know, there are no restrictions on bike-riding on campus. I always see people doing that.
The apartments are small, but they're nice. Everything, including internet and TV, is included in your rent, which I think is awesome. Here is some more information about Allerton (the grad student/family housing).
Yep, they allow biking as far as I know. I've been nearly run down by a few while on campus. ;)
I like living off campus - one apartment my husband and I really love staying at is Indian Valley by Mike's Place and it allows for pets as well. It may be about two or three miles from campus - I haven't measured the distance but it's less than ten minutes from the apartment to White Hall on campus. PARTA also runs through as well. So if our cars break down, I can easily use that to get to my classes and back

as for stuff to do in kent, downtown is basically bar city. i'm not from ohio either, and to be honest i always thought the town was a little :too: small for my taste. but there's always a lot of random stuff going on around town, like movies being shown outside or some ice sculpture demonstration. akron is close, and cleveland is about 40 minutes away. but if biking is your main mode of transportation, theeen well the school usually brings in a few big acts each year
