6 Days and Counting

Just when I didn't think I'd see anything more amazing than Anderson Cooper ripping a chunk out of Mary Landrieu's ass on Thursday night, along comes this clip from last night's Hannity & Colmes. Never thought I'd be giving credit to any of the reporters on Fox News, but Geraldo Rivera (yes, you read that correctly) and Shepard Smith gave me ( Read more... )

Kenya, don't even get me started. I'm out of words right now, because I'm trying to make sure I don't descend into the depression that came along after 9/11. And this is bigger. This is going to change our nation. I don't care what anyone says; this is a shock to the very values that we as a country hold dear. Liberals and conservatives can agree on one aspect of government: it is first and foremost in place to guarantee our security. And we have failed in ways I never imagined. I say this, too, as someone who's choosing emergency management as my career. It's devastating on so many levels.

You should do pro-bono work. I'm going to volunteer later, in a month or two, when the excitement dies down and volunteer numbers dwindle. Amy and her husband are going to take a week with Habitat for Humanity. We can all do our part, as help is going to be needed for years to come.

*hugs*

I know. That's the worst part of this. I'm seeing things I never thought I'd see in America. Things our government would declare inhumane and barbaric if they were taking place in Africa, Cuba or Indonesia, and our response has been totally weak and ineffectual. It's unreal.

As for the pro bono work, I'm looking into ways I can help. The problem is that most of the work needs to be done in Alabama, Mississipi and Louisiana, (and maybe Texas with so many people taking refuge there), but I'm not licensed in any of those states. Hopefully, the American Bar Association will have info for those of us who want to help in other ways.

The Department of Homeland Security is an utter joke. God help us all in the event of a biological or nuclear attack.
My thoughts exactly...the lack of any organization is pretty appalling. I've donated what money I can, and I wish I could do more...I hope to God that the local/state/federal govt. stop dicking around and start doing more to help these people, because from what I've seen on TV, they're doing a really shitty job.

On a more shallow note, I was just about to email you because I got my DVDs today! So thank you! I've been watching VM all evening...must find some VM icons.

I'm so happy you got the DVDs! Watching VM is definitely a good diversion right about now. I still can't tear myself away from all this hurricane coverage, even though it's making me sick to my stomach.

This list of government inadequacies and cockups over Katrina will make you even angrier:

I'm sorry, but the president's visit was nothing more than a political photo op. What was accomplished by that?

Trying to keep his approval rating out of the negatives? If I were one of those people he met with, I'd be like, "I don't want a hug; give me some damn food!"

I haven't really talked about the hurricane because I just keep alternating between extreme rage and extreme depression when I read/see anything about it. It is at least satisfying to go to C&L and see TV journalists do their job and be just as outraged as everyone else about the ineptitude of the government's response and the upbeat attitude of some politicians (because we're all soooo concerned with Trent Lott rebuilding his house). I mean, fuck, when Geraldo has a better grasp of what's going on than you do, you know you're in trouble.

And Gingrich is completely right (did I just type that?!) about not being prepared for an attack. It's been four years since 9/11, and yet, it seems like we're less capable ( ... )

Could you believe that shit? Sometimes I just can't imagine what goes through Bush's mind. He's standing in the middle of devestation, people's lives are ruined and people are dying, and he's joking about rebuilding Trent Lott's house and sitting on the damned porch! I hope his advisers have really effective blood control medication. They must need it.

The whole situation is mindnumbing. And the President is just a tool. I was amazed when he was in MS with the gov. and Lott, and was saying how they were all in 'high spirits'. Well isn't that great, because everyone else is living in the fifth ring of hell. He, and his cronies, are out of touch with reality, even when surrounded by it.

And Fox News is such a joke (not that you didn't already know that), but today they had a whole think on why not to play the 'blame game'. Could you imagine if this has happened and Clinton was in office? Their heads would explode blaming him for everything from the hurricane to the temp. of the Gulf.

Those poor people just need so much help, not more BS from the government.

And please note, who did they just hire to try to straighten this mess up? The former head of FEMA under Clinton.

Well, the Governor of Louisiana hired him, because she rightfully realized that James Lee Witt kicked ass and FEMA got shit done while he was in charge. Then again, Clinton raised the head of FEMA to a cabinet-level position and gave FEMA the resources needed to be effective, unlike his successor who immediately slashed the budget and reduced the importance of the agency as soon as he could. And now we're all paying for that decision. Greeeeat.

Did you see Meet the Press, with the Pres. of Jefferson Parrish? Heartwrenching, the man is broken telling the story of a co-workers mother that called everyday, waiting to be saved and wasn't. She drowned on Friday. Then he started to beg for help, that was THIS morning.

And then they cut to Haley Barber saying he has gotten everything he asked for. Sadly he didn't ask for the soul he obviously sold to the GOP back.

But don't worry because right now Rumsfeld is on TV telling us how everything is working and great. These people of f'ing delusional. And the amount of hubris that they show is horrifying.

THere has to be as special place in hell for all the people that are primarily worrying about their political life as opposed to the actual lives of others.
