I like to leave it open for the reader to decide; I always have this vision of the characters when I write, but I think if I over-write it with my own version of events it spoils what you get to imagine for the story. There could be endless variations about what is happening, and that's half the fun of the story is seeing all the things the reader can imagine!

So much unknown about these two , and regardless, it is very sad. I think everyone has someone they could write a similar letter to. But perhaps this is the beginning of a renewed relationship. Gah, you people and your open-ended stories! :)
