Rusty. For the love of god, just stop.

If there is a fourth series of Torchwood, unless some serious changes are made and Rusty is not involved in any way, I'm not watching it. This coming from a long-time Dr Who fan who actually enjoyed TW up until now.

Completely ignored the wishes of the fanbase to the point of overturning a decision the last production people in Series 2 to not do something that would lose them all their viewers. From what I hear, that last production team went "Hm, we should do A." "But wait, doing A will make everyone stop watching our show!" "Good point. Let's do B instead." and then Rusty went in and said "I'm doing A! Lalala, I can't hear your protests!"

He also ruined a lot of character growth that can never be fixed and turned the whole thing depressing. Like Battlestar Galactica oh-Gods-what's-the-point-anymore-if-we-have-to-lose-so-much-to-get-anything-done depressing. Which is, incidentally, why I stopped watching that show. I want to enjoy my hobbies, not be made infinitely sad by them.

The third series was that bad, huh? I was watching Stolen Earth and Journey's End recently, and the little cameo's of the three-person team didn't seem to hold much promise. Did it have a good period in the middle of the season or was the whole thing bad?

The 3rd Series was actually a five episode mini-series aired every night for a week. It started off just fine, but when it started getting toward the "climax," Rusty's evil hand made itself known and everything went straight to hell in a handbasket. I had no real problem with the reduced team, especially since they more or less drafted Gwen's husband Rhys, but the latter part of the plot a) didn't make sense, b) was needlessly destructive and depressing, c) undid a lot of character growth and personal plot development, and d) seemed to be geared simply to piss off the fanbase and make Rusty's favourite Mary-Sue (okay, second favourite. Rose isn't in this one) more important. Watch the first three episodes and make up your own ending from there. It'll probably be better than the canon.

It just came out the last week. 5 episode mini-series. Like I told Ben, I recommend watching the first three episodes and making up your own ending.

I'm currently entertaining the hypothesis that when Moffat took over DW one of his demands was that he got Jack back. Which I approve of (but then, I gave up on TW last year).

But he'll be getting him back as a bitter and depressed douchebag (more so than he was at the beginning of TW, even) and not at all the Jack the fans were introduced to and loved in Empty Child. Unless they entirely ignore what's been going on in TW, which would irritate me consistency-wise.

I hate being one of those fans, but I demand a ret-con.

Thing is, Torchwood has never been canon in Doctor Who, because they didn't want any reason for the small childrens to want to go watch TW. And it's not like when he showed up in Utopia it had much to do with TW at all. (Then again, from what I heard, Children of the Earth basically makes it so Doctor Who isn't canon in TW either...)

...I like my fragile hopes and dreams...

That's not completely true. I haven't gone through in minute detail, and it's possible that there are contradictions, but there's a lot of TW that shows up in DW. For instance, in "Turn Left", when the Torchwood team gets involved in the hypothetical past. And of course, any of the several episodes where there are blatant crossovers. They don't specifically mention everything that TW does in DW (or vice versa) but they obviously exist in the same canon universe and the producers seem to be trying to keep them tied together. Maybe they're doing a bad job of it, but they were obviously trying, at least earlier on.

My plan is to write a letter to the BBC telling them exactly what I think of Rusty and his crap.

I'll sign it! And maybe add something about the monstrosity that is "Merlin".
