Today - by my estimation, at least - the kittens are one month old. Both of them are using the litterbox on their own; both of them weigh about a pound; eyes and ears are open and alert; and the black one has started her foray into the world of solid food. They also both appear to be female, not that this will have any bearing on their names (more on this later).
For context, this was just after we found them...
...and these are the two hand screens I made into an impromptu cage to keep them in while we were at the hotel:
When I took them home, my older cats were intrigued, confused (Paul), and angry (Adora).
The kittens lived in a box for a little while and had their own external hard-drive (and sometimes a power supply) to cuddle up to.
Protip: Hard-drives make the perfect surrogate kitten mother/siblings. They're warm and they purr.
They opened their eyes!
(The grey one was slower and a lot more awkward about this than the black one)
They outgrew their box, so we made a bigger place for them:
When I went back into the field, my parents took care of them and called me with daily kitten updates.
Paul was largely unconcerned.
I visited their siblings, Magellan and Stevie, while I was in the field and they refused to sit still for pictures.
When I came back, it was time for a new kitten enclosure. An awesome kitten enclosure.
They approved.
It's hard to see in crappy cell phone pictures, but bottle-feeding these suckers is painful.
But d'aww...
Adora's still not happy, but Paul's come to terms with his new housemates.
And they're learning things! Well, the black one is.
The kittens right now:
You may have noticed that the black kitten is just a bit smarter, more adventurous, curious, and more developed than the grey one. This, among a series of other factors (such as colouring, other personality bits, and a lack of names that make everyone happy), might very well lead to them being saddled with the incredibly unfortunate names of Holmes and Watson. *facepalm* Mags has already started introducing them to her students as such. These cats are going to have a hard life, I can tell.
