straining toward daylight
warmth and the
rough textured existence
from inside the fluid prison
of femininity
longing for fumbling
akward movement
to lay intwined with another
and uniform
trapped by duality
of form and condition
then freedom
brief, fleeting
like the gasping breath
before plunging
into the cold darkness
of uncertainty
hesitation
never lasting long
transforming into transformation
and delicacy
of light and foam
translucency
an amorphous existence
protean ascent is the second in the fairy tale series I've been working on, this one based on the original tale of The Little Mermaid...not that Disney tripe. The title makes reference to Proteus, who in mythology could change his form at will. The poem attempts to focus on the transformations the mermaid undergoes throughout the story and her existence in different mediums, while also touching on the idea of fluid as a feminine image and land as masculine...with some envy of the masculine by the feminine before transcending to the androgynous.
