[not]obtrusive

Jul 04, 2005 22:26

seven o'clock at the twenty-four hour
supermarked
baptized
by the harsh glow of pale
fluorescent light
the cacophony of hustling, bustling
crowds
women
with toddlers tugging on pants legs
buying produce
and boxed green jello
men
buying lottery tickets and cigarettes
and t.v. dinners
and flirting with
cashiers
who are far too young
college students
with ramen and alcohol
magazines
condoms
flashing fake i.d.s
calling across the store to
friends
large families
with shoeles children
shouting in foreign languages
shoving through the aisles
i never buy anything
just watch all the
people

[not]obtrusive was one of my first pieces, which I recently found in my room. I am proud of the fact that it was the poem that first got the word 'condom' into my high school's literary magazine. That was a small triumph for me in my distaste for censorship. This poem focuses on the observation of people just doing a simple activity like shopping and observing the commonalities that tie groups together. It was brought on by my penchant for people watching.
