Hirpling along!

Hirple. It's a great word, one of the wonderful Scottish words that are potentially slipping from use today. I make a point of using them with the kids so that they grow up with the same rich oral tradition that I did. Oh, what wonderful words. Have I ever told you that your vocabulary delights me? I just wish I could hear it in your accent more often. ;) And your skiver coaster has a place of honor on my desk where I can see it and smile any time I want. :)

I'm so teaching Elisabeth bahookie...

I love that coaster too! And yes, 'bahookie' should be a required word for any toddler to know. I'll make sure to teach you more Scots words (in my accent!) next time we meet up! (Hopefully September '09!)

That's one of those things that kind of stinks about being multicultural... Because of my mixed heritage, and my suburban, Midwestern U.S. lifestyle, I don't get to use any cool colloquialisms. And I can't borrow anybody else's, because it would defeat the point!

There was this Panamanian woman who came in to buy bread a few weeks ago, and when she saw me, she started speaking to me in Spanish. Oh, I couldn't understand a single word of it, don't get me wrong, but I was rather pleased that at least one person had a clue as to my nationality. Being homogenized kind of stinks.

But with several different peoples and cultures in your heritage, can't you pick the one you like most (words/language/cultural background) and 'adopt' that? I bet there are plenty of Spanish colloquialisms you could use! (Ask Chris!) :D
