Hmmm, well, upstairs in my house, we have windows in the roof. Sunroof windows, I guess. They, too, face the sun and let in sunlight, but also let in a lot of cold air. Here's what we did:
We bought a few pieces of plexi-glass that would go right over the windowframe. It goes right on top of the drywall. All the way around the plexiglass are these thingies that hold the plexi-glass in place. It's hard to describe. It lets in the warmth of the sunlight while keeping out most of the draft.
It works great. The biggest drawback is that they're a pain to put up and take down. And since they cover the blinds, it makes it difficult to put the blinds up and down when you want to. But if you're in Alaska, I suspect you'll want to keep them up for most of the year.
If you'd like a photo so you have a better idea of what I'm talking about, let me know and I'll upload one to photobucket and send you a link.
