I agree with all of this and yet, I sort of loved it for its ridiculous and campiness. All that I ask for in a musical. And also because took gay best friend who was VERY LOUDLY appalled by the entire thing which made me just laugh even harder. I felt it was my revenge for him making me watch Cold Mountain. :))
I have a hard time believing that Cold Mountain was on par with Mamma Mia.
I get loving it for the campy and fun aspects. I was just annoyed that I was kind of tuning in just for the Who's the dad? and they went all "You care about that? Stupid! We won't tell you! Ha ha ha ha."
It's like that old show my two dads. But with Abba.
I really can't remember too much about Cold Mountain except wanting everyone in it to die so that it would end already and having the dude GUSH the whole way home about the beauty of it all. :((
Yes, that was really stupid. But maybe they wanted everyone to make their own decision (heehee, I know worst sort of cop out) and I will always think it was Harry (Colin Firth's character, the only name I remember oddly enough). :))
haha, I totally want a shirt now with: "Like My Two Dads. But with Abba."
I was horrified by this entire film. (except the setting, which just sort of made me jealous that I wanted to live there.)
My mother was visiting, and rented it because she'd seen it and thought that my husband and I needed to see it. She pretty much squeed and clapped through the whole thing, and hubby and I were mostly 0_o throughout.
Did Not Like At All.
And I'd like to say that I HAVE VERY LOW STANDARDS WHEN IT COMES TO ENTERTAINMENT. This was possibly the worst film I'd seen in ... forever.
Adendum: The newest three Star Wars movies were the worst I've seen. This barely scratched the surface of acting/writing fail of those.
Oh, and the Batman movie. What the fucking hell? I seriously could not watch The Phantom Menace. Completely unwatchable to me, and sadly, I seem to be the only one in the world who thinks so.
I think a lot of people hated Phantom Menace. I didn't, but was underwhelmed.
But my single least favorite scene occurs in one of the "new" Star Wars (it's not PM, maybe the second but I'm not sure). Anakin says to Padme-and this is the height of Lucas's romantic dialog writing-he says to her "I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth." (I think he's touching her cheek at this point.)
Oh, I hated pretty much all the Batman movies. (I liked the tv show as a kid, though.)
I was literally dragged to the first Spiderman movie, thinking it would be that same put-on campy dark and cheezoid crap that the Batman movies had been, and was SO pleasantly surprised that it had *gasp* character development and even WRITING! And I had empathy for the characters!! Not saying they were great, but it really showed me how good the Batman movies could have been.
And yeah, I was SO EXCITE for the new Star Wars movies when they came out. The first 'original' one aired when I was seven and it changed my life. I really wanted to see how anniken became Darth Vader. by the time it actually came to be, I was bored to tears and shocked and appalled at the crappy writing and acting. *sad face*
I told you this movie is pretty crappy! What I really hated was that they actually cast Meryl Streep for this. I know she's a great actress, but seriously? They couldn't get anyone else?

Most of my flist adored it was putting it in their top 10 movies and buying the DVDs and wanting to go to sing along screenings.
I went with my mum to see it and she LOVED it.
Even Julie Walters couldn't win me over. I cringed so hard my back's never been the same.
And I like some real crap!
I like So I Married an Axe Murderer!
