We picked up the Game of Thrones DVD.
cut for mild spoilers
It's better than I expected. Most of the cast is pretty solid, with the exception of whoever's playing Jaime Lannister (not blond nor arrogantly smarmy enough). Soft porn scenes are pretty meh. But on the whole I'm liking so far.
There is, however, one aspect that is comically bad.
Yes, I'm talking about Drogo's khalasar, his vast army of tens of thousands or even a hundred thousand warriors. The army with which Danaerys and Viserys plan to (re)conquer Westeros, a continent the size of South America.
The television show, one presumes they ran out of budget for CGI, is unable to show anything remotely approaching that size. This khalasar, this vast army, consists of two dozen people.
Maybe three dozen tops.
I am not exaggerating.
Patricia says they look more like a small town gang.
It's so small that it makes Danaerys and Viserys look absolutely delusional. They expect to conquer a continent with a few dozen people? They have the numbers to, perhaps, occupy a small and undefended village. A walled city would be beyond their means and ability. Their dreams, while grand, seem to be slightly unrealistic. And, since it's impossible to take seriously, it kind of drags down the momentum a bit, which I think is additionally troublesome since this storyline is already nearly completed removed from the rest.
