Here's my advice: Just tell the truth. Say something like, "I think you're a great person, [insert name here]... but things just aren't working out, so I don't think we should continue our relationship."

I told you babeeeee. Just be HONEST. Just say.... "I think you're a wonderful guy but things aren't working out." That's the best way to put it... at least I think so. :) Sure his ego may be bruised for awhile, but he'll move on.
