This is so true. In any professional environment, that first pick-up of the phone is often the deal maker or deal breaker.

When I started at the job I have now, I was a temp and only supposed to be there from Nov-Dec and let go after Jan 1. But because the company president liked my phone skills, she convinced my then manager to keep me on.

As silly as it sounds, no matter what was happening seconds before the phone rings, I smile when I answer the phone. They say it can be "heard" over the phone. It must be true, cause I'm still with the place 4 years later and among other things, I'm the PA to one of the VPs.
