Taking my mind off the lack of news about the new job I'm up for...

To continue with the theme of my personal journey I'll tell you about a few other things I've changed in my life since I started reading naturalliving. I've started composting all our food waste to help keep it from going in a landfill, and also because the soil in our garden is pretty poor. I bought some reusable shopping bags from Reusablebags.com, so we aren ( Read more... )

That note at the end is really nice. You're very considerate.

And, for the record, I am very interested to hear/read about the changes you're making.

Thanks! Andrew doesn't think I would be able to carry a baby everywhere, but I would like to try.

oh i like those zuchinis! they are called ronde de nice i think.

for the weight have you been screened for hyperinsulinemia? that is what we have and it means having to keep the blood sugar very even cuz otherwise the blood sugar spikes and then the insulin spikes and drops the blood sugar down and the insulin spikes set up the body to store fat instead of using up calories. what it means for eating is cutting out most starches and sugars and eating more leafy greens and stuff with low glycemic loads. so lots of grains is out cuz they are mostly starch and starch converts to stored fat easy. i can have little bits of chana dal and quinoa and brown rice, but too much and the blood sugar goes wonky. i do eat free range organic grass fed beef, to. i try to keep the meals mostly veg with a little other carb like brown rice or quinoa and a little fat and some protein.

I think that the weight gain has much more to do with the sudden drop in my physical activity when I graduated college. But no, I haven't been screened. I think I'll just do this diet and see if that helps. I've just finished the book and the daily intake the author suggests is at least 500g raw veggies, and at least 500g cooked veggies. So basically eat as much veggies as you can, plus some beans. Animal products are a big no-no if you are trying to lose a lot of weight. I'm not that heavy, just a bit plump, so I'm still going to eat what my MiL cooks for Sunday dinner, though I'll ask for less meat and more veggies. And I'm going to steer clear of sugar for at least a month. I'm hoping that my tastebuds will adjust and I'll not longer want anything that sweet. Especially since I'll be eating a lot of fruit. I'll let you know how that works for me. I hope that I'll be able to stick to it, since my hubby is pretty resistant to the idea.

I love reading about the changes you're making, and your posts are always informative because you have some excellent, clearly well-considered ideas. I've just ordered some of those shopping bags, but will keep an eye out for a supplier over here.

lumin beat me to it on the comment about carbohydrates and starch/sugar etc: it's an often over-looked factor in weight gain, particularly when most mainstream diets are based on a low fat/high carb intake and we're led to believe that a carb-heavy diet is better for us.

Your final comment is lovely and so typical of you :)

*hugs*

As in my comment to Lumin above, I think the weight gain is more to do with the sudden drop in the amount of physical activity that I get since I graduated last year. So I'm going to start this new diet this week and see if that does anything. I'm giving up sugar and animal products (except Sunday dinner at the in-law's) for at least a month. And I'm going to eat as much raw plant foods as I can. So that should help.
