I'm finally caught up on the last two episodes, as of this afternoon, so now I can PROPERLY comment on the content of your post.

Both 'deaths' were botched - Jenny's was imaginative and beautifully written, but spoiled by her revival, Clara's is plainly not a death at all.Agreed! Plus, there was the whole thing with River Song's own 'echo' still hanging around, until the Doctor said a proper good-bye to her, but he'd been doing a very effective job of pretending not to see or hear her until then? Hmm.... Personally, I felt a bit manipulated, emotionally, by all that, though it caught me up temporarily as it was happening ( ... )

I've finally got around to re-watching the finale and Crimson Horror eps. I liked the finale more on second viewing, though I hold by my views that the deaths were cheats, and so not worth being emotional about. And all a build up for the 50th anniversary as you say - but who can argue with John Hurt as the promise-breaking mysterious non-Doctor Doctor? Still love the concept of the TARDIS leaking insideyness as it decays.

The Crimson Horror stood up to second viewing, though the plot holes were a bit more evident. Mr Sweet was still rubbish, but fun, camp rubbish. And Rachel Stirling and Diana Rigg had a great acting frisson together. Also Matt Smith in his long johns is just plain funny. And agree that both eps benefitted from Strax, Jenny and Madame Vastra. Shame they weren't in the Gaiman ep.
