I'm having trouble coming to terms with the idea of "professional theatre". All I'm seeing at the moment is an overworked staff, incompetent design teams, and a director who knows his way around Equity rules so well that he's basically turned the last week, and the next two, into nothing but 10/12's. in this instance, the artistic director IS the director. He hired a name from New York, Paul something, and basically gives him free reign to be as lousy as he wants with lighting.

He is also very generous with spontaneous blackouts on stage, especially when people are working with potentially dangerous things like automation, or flying scenery (either drops OR the entire back wall of an apartment).

We've all seen what happens when the man in charge decides to take up direction. For all intents and purposes, there's no budget and no limit, until he sees what he wants to see.

i think you are wrong when you refer to the alley as a professional theatre. i work for Feld entertainment, and i would consider my employment way way more professional than what you are explaining. and that says a lot.
