In the U.S., we have our own resident lunatic "religious" man in the so-called Reverend, Fred Phelps and his inbred clan of trogolodytes. His own daughter, Shirley Phelps-Roper, has at least twice gone on the U.S.'s most conservative cable news channel (Fox, or FAUX, to its detractors) only to get torn a new asshole for her stupid, inane though all-too destructive comments.
Popescu would be happy in Iran, where gays/lesbians are frequently put to death, where Iran's President, Ahaminajad, has openly said "There are no homosexuals in Iran"-- because he has them killed.
The thing is, I don't think he'd be too happy in Iran as opposed to Canada. His Christian views would probably have him spit-roasted by the more extreme practitioners of Islam who would find his presence offensive.
Perhaps he should be transported there as punishment...
I spent a year in prep school after high school. I was my biology teacher's pet student. I knew I was gay but I was 18 and it was 1967 and no one else knew; certainly not that teacher who spent his summers being a counselor at a summer camp. One day he told us that he would have no problem shooting any of his campers if he found out they were gay.
It doesn't matter where you are, there are always gonna be these kinda vicious tools. It sucks that he's making your hometown seem to intolerant nationally.
In a strange way though, he should not be charged with anything. In fact, there is one wonderful thing about this, as horrible as it was:
High school kids, full of the next generation of voters, booed and hated what he said. Very vocally.
In 1993, in my high school in California, the first High School ACLU chapter was founded and we actually had a discussion of Homosexuality that was presented to the school. There were many high school students vocally unaccepting of homosexually and even saying "Ewwwwwwww!" out loud. Some of them used the word "faggot" as if it were a regular word.
2008, 15 years later, we get THAT result in the article. The man's speech was hateful and it evoked that disapproving reaction from students.

I couldn't be strangely happier.
