Let's break the rules! FIC CHALLENGE

May 23, 2009 14:14

In every fandom, there are certain truisms that the general majority of people work with.   Or maybe just in your own head - there are RULES, right?  Here are some examples of JoBros "canon" that I've seen most often:

JOE = spaz, attention-hound, would take a bullet for Nick, trysexual, usually feels guilty about how much he wants to initiate penile contact with Nick, a weird blend of fey and toppy, wears his heart on his sleeve, has a trail of psycho ex-girlfriends who write songs about him, rocks the tamborine, is overly concerned about how his hair looks and loves nothing more in life than showering Nick with random dub-con hugs.

NICK = serious, competitive, a perfectionist, always in control, giggles - but only for Joe, all the musical talent, sporty, knows-it-all-except-how-he-needs-Joe-to-explain-masturbation, likes girls with highlighted hair, rocks his diabetes, and is the "straight one", except when he's whimpering and begging for Joe or Sam Winchester or Richard Alpert or anyone, really, as long as he's bigger, older and has body hair, to give it to him harder.

KEVIN = blissfully unaware of pretty much everything.

Sound right?  I'm sure I'm missing a few.  The point is, it's EASY to fall back on those rules.  I'd like to shake things up a bit!

SO HERE'S THE CHALLENGE:
  1. Post a prompt.  Post one, two, four, eight, as many as you can think of.   The prompts can include any pairings, as long as Joe or Nick are principal characters, and Kevin is NOT.
  2. Pick a prompt, and write comment!fic that meets the prompt.
  3. Then, using that SAME prompt, write a second version of the fic with the boys roles REVERSED.
SO, for example, if you pick the prompt: "Nick's tight shirts drive Joe crazy," then you have to write one version where that's the case, and one where JOE'S tight shirts drive NICK crazy.  Both fics should be posted as responses to that single prompt.

They don't need to be exact replicas - it won't be fun if you just copy and paste with the names switched.  The point of the challenge is to get us thinking about how we can put the boys in different situations without completely blowing their characterizations.

You don't need to post both at the same time - and you can respond to multiple prompts.  I think we'll get some really GREAT fic out of this!

OK?  GO.
