That, or they plan to keep the secret so that anyone they care enough about can be given immortality as well.

Then there are those that are immortal already, and just have to deal with it.

...oh, and a life sentence is still finite, despite the term 'life'.

Usually it's for a long period where the accused would either be near the end of their life, or could not reasonably be considered to live longer than the sentence. I.E. an 100 year sentence for a 50 year old man.
