It can definitely be done. . .the other has to want to be friends, too. That's the major thing! They have to not threaten a restraining order (seriously, I was feeling good and just wanted to say hi and ask how the guy was doing - in the army, he told me he was washing a tank that day - believable - and I believed it, had no clue he was in town - didn't try to find him) and he threatened a restraining order!
My other relationships, we would've stayed friends if we just hadn't lost contact (moving, changing schools, etc.)
Of course, IMO, always helps to date and have no sex - friendship is much easier that way.
Of all my breakups, I think one has been a 'friendship' once the dust settles. It's not like we hang out alot together, but we can be civil towards each other. Which, I guess is not too terribly bad...the rest there is no talking, and just avoidance when we encounter each other. :/
