As many of you who haven't been living under a rock for the past year are aware, tomorrow is the presidential election. It appears that I have been left with a decision either to not vote, or to travel 300 miles overnight to do so

This language from the absentee app:
"When I apply for this absentee ballot, I understand that my name will be stricken from the list of qualified electors and, when I cast this absentee ballot, I understand that I will not be entitled to vote at my regular polling place."

A further update: N informed me that there may be a possible loophole in that the strickening may apply to receiving the absentee ballot and not the ballot application. I called the elections office to confirm this, and they said that because a ballot had been sent for me, that I was stricken from the local voting roll at my precinct tomorrow.
Oh, and get this. Despite the fact that I confirmed to the elections board that I had NOT received my ballot via mail, they could not flag my ballot (if they received it) as being fraudulent, i.e. not from me. So not only am I disenfranchised this time around, but I may be on the receiving end of possible voter fraud. Man, this process is screwed up.
Well, it turns out that I was able to cast a provisional ballot up here in Jefferson County. Luckily I knew some people that were in fact in charge of my voting precinct. However, I will have to follow up this next week to make sure nobody sent in my ballot in my name, and that my provisional is indeed counted. We will see. The Mobile County elections board (the main one, not my local precinct) was entirely unhelpful.

Incidentally, Florida e-mailed me my absentee ballot as a PDF even though I am on the other side of the world. That is a much better system, I think.
