I'm getting fewer and fewer story alerts...I think we've officially hit the mid-summer fanfic doldrums. Can't wait for NCIS to start shooting again and give writers lots of lovely new spoilers for inspiration.
Seems to me the busiest fic periods are at the beginning of the summer when people are writing based on the finale and at the end of summer when authors are writing based on spoilers. But I definitely remember this mid-summer slump from last year. In 2010 I used it to read and rec all the NCIS fandom "classics" that I'd never gotten around to.
As usual, I'm torn between wanting more fic to read and being vaguely relieved that I don't have to slog through as much. I've got dozens and dozens of story and author alerts set on ff.net (basically anything that has a plausible plot and an acquaintace with grammar and spelling) and I still only got a couple of alerts yesterday.
I guess that's true - it's a good time to catch up on some good stuff you might have missed.
My drabble project is keeping me busy, no time to write anything else. I watch each episode twice before I start writing, so it's quite time-consuming. But now that I'm not working full-time anymore, I may be able to kick out something more. We'll see...
I don't know about everyone else, but my fic output hasn't been quite itself lately because I'm so busy hacking away at my assignment for ncis_ficathon. I think littlesammy said the same thing.
When a show goes on hiatus for the summer, I always have this feeling of, "Oh no! How will I survive the next few months with no show!!" which I suspect is what sparks some of the post-finale fic explosion in any fandom.
But once I get past that, I like the summer slowdown. I don't know that i could ever go without being fannish about something, but it is nice to have the opportunity to be fannish about something else. It keeps things from getting stale.
Plus, outside is nicer in the summer. It's not as fun to sit in front of the computer screen when I know I could be lounging in the sun instead.

See, this surprises me. I would think there'd be MORE fanfic in summertime because people would be wanting to fill the empty space.
(Thanks very much for the rec, BTW!)

I think it's totally understandable. I'd rather be sitting on the beach than in front of a computer screen.
