I didn't live blog this time so I could really immerse myself in the episode, and now I'm sitting here trying to furiously capture my thoughts and emotions before I go read anyone else's reaction online.
Trying to form coherent words at the moment is actually a little difficult.
I've said before that I've never actually cried at NCIS, but the last scene was as close as I've ever come. The tightness in my chest... Oh Ducky, Ducky, Ducky. Right after we saw Abby & Gibbs, McGee, and Tony & Ziva in peril that was just a knife in a fresh wound. Knowing that David McCallum signed on for next season doesn't make me feel better in this moment, not even a little bit. I'm also really worried about McGee, because he looked like he took the worst of the explosion in front of that big window with no cover, not to mention the huge flying pieces of glass.
I really, really liked this episode. I retract all prior statements about Gary Glasberg being shite at cliffhangers.
The other best moments of the episode:
-Jimmy hugging Ducky! Oh, that has such a bittersweet note now, after the end of episode, but at the time I was all FUCK YEAH! Such an awesome moment.
-Jimmy and Breena. Their relationship is surprisingly believeable given how few scenes they've had and that was a really beautiful scene. Breena is gorgeous and it was great to see Jimmy in normal clothes.
Other good moments:
-When Gibbs and Ryan are standing outside Parker's school after Dearing threatens him, Ryan is playing with her necklace and Gibbs is looking at her with an expression of such tender concern, it's really beautiful. First time I'll admit to actually liking a scene between these two.
-And Ryan is now gone. That counts as an excellent moment. (Although she only made me cringe twice in this episode, which is a record for her.)
-The group hug between Jimmy, McGee, Tony, and Ziva. Also the psychopathic smile that Cole gives them as he walks in and notices it. (I generally liked Cole in this episode, although his character still baffles me in a bad way.)
-Tony and Ziva's conversation about weddings and eloping. That was quite cute.
-Ziva and Abby having a moment and Ziva winking at her.
-Ziva and McGee's hilarious obsession with Jimmy and Breena getting on with the baby-making, already.
The not so good:
-Dearing: the world's most confusingly motivated and underdeveloped villain
-Cole: why are we trusting him to disarm a bomb planted by his known associate? I'd be suspicious that he'd trigger that thing. This character is just a mess.
-No wedding, not even a little bit. I hate being promised something and having it taken away.
-The anvilly exposition meeting Gibbs, Abby, and Vance have outside. Abby doesn't go outside.
Gah, everytime I think about that last scene I get riled up again. Oh, Ducky.
What did you guys think?
I masochistically rewatched the last few minutes. Now that I can focus a little better, I'm noticing how beautiful those last two shots of Ducky are. The score is perfect as well.
NCIS really kicked it up a notch. This reminded me a lot of "The Birnam Wood" episode of The West Wing. (That's a high compliment.)
