Weekly Recs 8/13/10

Aug 13, 2010 12:12

Here's your latest edition of Weekly Recs. The new completed stories are all fairly short this week, but one of the new works in progress is already well over 100,000 words, so get reading!

Completed Stories:
(Mostly newly-completed stories, plus some old ones if I haven't read them before.)

"Shark Attack!" by Channel D
[PG, ensemble, set during season 7, ~800 words]

Summary: The team investigates a crime that's close to home. Very close.

KEW note: A comic gem in honor of Shark Week. I loved the over-the-top situation mixed in with very plausible dialogue.

"Recognition" by 88Keys
[PG, Abby, McGee, set during 7x22 "Borderland", ~700 words}

Quote: "Wasn't one time being a hostage in a foreign country enough? Did your trip to Somalia give you some kind of thirst for danger? What were you thinking, McGee?"

KEW note: A very strong Abby voice.

"Not Where I Promised You We'd Be By Now" by amybethwrites
[Bones, PG-13, Booth/Brennan, ~590 words]

Summary: Brennan has a label for what they are.

"Honor Thy Father and Thy Mother" by ladychi
[Bones, PG, Brennan, Parker, future fic, ~1,700 words]

Summary: Only two years of being a wife; she will have the rest of her life to be a widow.

KEW note: Really beautiful, really sad. I love the person the author's made Parker grow up to be.

Works in Progress:
(Stories in this section will be carried over week to week as long as I continue to follow them or until they are completed or abandoned. Recent updates will be noted.)

"Mistaken Identity" by Laine3112 *NEW
[PG-13, ensemble, casefile]

Summary: After sustaining a serious injury during a dangerous assignment, Tony assumes his undercover persona, causing the FBI to believe he has gone rogue. Can Gibbs find and clear his agent before tragedy strikes?

KEW note: Fantastic, long, well-written and well-plotted casefile. I haven't finished reading all of the 115,000+ words posted so far, but I'm thoroughly enjoying it. (This story is apparently already completed, but is being posted serially.)

"Thicker Than Water" by keladryevangelinerhysenn (senn815) *NEW
[PG-13, Tali, Ziva, Ari, pre-series]

Summary: I baked cookies while my sister was hanging out of the side of a helicopter with a machine gun in hand and while my brother launched missiles at me from Palestine. I watched as my father slowly destroyed my family as well as our lives.

KEW note: This is an unusual and unexpectedly dark story set as the David children's destinies begin to diverge. Tali begins collecting the evidence of what's going wrong. (I'm strangely reminded Eugenides's The Virgin Suicides, with Tali, though doomed, playing the part of the narrators. How's that for free associating?)

"Regency" by Trinity Destler  (trinity_destler) *UPDATED
[PG, ensemble, set after 3x4 "Hiatus", alternate link]

Author's Summary: In the fallout after "Hiatus" the team copes, Tony leads, and it isn't at all like they expected.

KEW note: Part 8 of 9 posted. As sporadically as this fic is updated, I always really enjoy it and I'll be sad to see it end! This latest installment has pitch-perfect interaction between Ziva and Gibbs and Ziva and Ducky and some utterly brilliant ending lines.

"In Transit" by jelenamichel *UPDATED
[PG-13, Tony/Ziva, set in late season 7]

Summary: An investigation takes the team to Pearl Harbor as Tony and Ziva try to navigate their 'relationship', Gibbs tries to look the other way, and McGee tries to get a clue.

KEW note: This fic has taken a turn towards the fluffy. Many Tony/Ziva fans may heartily enjoy; I'm on the fence.

"Half a World Away" by Squinttoyou  *UPDATED
[Bones, PG-13, Booth/Brennan, set post 5x22 "The Beginning in the End"]

Summary: The world is a big place, but it's not that hard to stay in touch.

KEW note: Two new chapters.

"Sicarii" by PegasusUnbound
[R, Ziva, set after 6x25 "Aliyah"]

Author's Summary: It was like she'd once told McGee . . . there is only so much torment the human body can endure. No one can hold out forever, not even Gibbs. Not even her.

"Topsy Turvy" by Bob Rhynoplasty (bobrhynoplasty)
[PG-13, Tony, Gibbs, pre-series, sequel to "Slaughter House"]

Author's Summary: Tony knew that he would meet Gibbs again, he just hoped it would be under better circumstances...

"Symbiosis" by Zaedah (zaedah)
[PG, McGee, Tony/Ziva]

Author's Summary: "The thing that sticks a hook in McGee's gaping mouth in the midst of the unannounced programming is that Tony doesn't seem surprised."

"Rag Doll" by cheekymice (cheekymice)
[PG, Tony-centric, alternate link]

Author's Summary: Tony finds himself cut off from the rest of the team when Vance sends him on a difficult and unpleasant undercover assignment.

"The Impractical Heart" by Pough
[PG-13, Tony-centric]

Author's Summary: When a tiny virus sweeps through Tony's body, leaving catastrophic results, his team remains vigilant.

Ongoing Stories:
(These stories follow the events of canon or are collections of one-shots and therefore could continue indefinitely. Recent updates are noted. Stories will roll over from week to week until I stop following or they are abandoned. )

"What's Past is Prologue" by Caliente  *UPDATED
[PG-13, McGee/Abby, set during season 7]

Summary: A series of unrelated add-ins or 'un'-scenes during season 7 -- 2. 'Truth or Consequences' after Somalia, McGee and Abby take care of each other; 3. 'Reunion' McGee visits Abby's lab for some humility, reality and cheering up -- starring McGee and Abby.

"Touch and Go" by nancystagerat
[R, Tony/Ziva]

Summary: A collection of suggestive Tiva one-shots, the first of which involves live weapons and willing partners in an impromptu booty-call.

"Still and Always, McGee" by Malvolia
[G, McGee/Abby]

Author's Summary: Sometimes you have to give something up to safeguard something you want more. A series of one-shot missing McGee and Abby moments, starting with their break-up.

"Conversations"
by Embolalia
[PG, Ziva, Gibbs]

Author's Summary: A series of one-shot conversations between Ziva and Gibbs over the course of the show.

"Something More" by CSIGurlie07
[PG-13, Gibbs/Ziva, takes off from 5x12 "Stakeout"]

Author's Summary: The ever-evolving relationship between Ziva and Gibbs. Unusual, unorthodox, and totally right. It started with a stakeout, and nothing will ever be the same.
