Weekly Recs 8/26/10

Completed Stories:
(Mostly newly-completed stories, plus some old ones if I haven't read them before.)
"Lying Eyes" by joykatleen
[PG-13, Gibbs, Abby, ensemble, a little bit of Gibbs/Hollis Mann, casefile, set during season 5, ~122,000 words]
Summary: A serial rapist is hunting women in the tristate area, leaving little to go on. But after finding a connection to one of the agency's own, it will take everything the team has to catch the criminal and save themselves.
KEW note: A stunningly well-written case fic notable for its compelling, SVU-like plot and an unusual amount of insight into the characters, particularly Gibbs.
"Nothing Easy, Something Good" by tielan
[PG-13, Tony/Ziva, set during season 7, ~3,000 words]
Summary: Love and betrayal are common themes of the men in Ziva's life: father, brother, lover. That won't be the case at NCIS.
KEW note: I particularly liked the section told from Vance's point of view.
"C130s, Jump Seats, and Harbors" by Jananae
[PG-13, Tony, Ziva, Gibbs, set during 7x24 "Rule 51", ~1,750 words]
Summary: The silence of a nighttime plane ride offers some much needed time for introspection.
KEW note: This is a lovely piece of introspection that's an excellent meditation on Tony and Ziva's broken-then-mended relationship as well as season 7.
"Undertow" by nancystagerat
[NC-17, Tony/Ziva, set post 6x02 "Agent Afloat", ~1,300 words]
Summary: She makes him feel too much, and sucks him under.
KEW note: A dramatic and beautifully moody piece that deliberately leaves a lot of things unexplained...including what's going on in the sections set in italics.
"Help" by jelenamichel (jelenamichel)
[NC-17, Tony/Ziva, ~11,000 words]
Summary: Tony and Ziva help each other out.
KEW note: Here's a special treat for Tony/Ziva fans who thought this hot little gem from jelenamichel was finished: apparently she had one more chapter left in her.

[PG, McGee/Abby, set post 7x01 "Truth or Consequences", ~500 words]
Summary: And he would be comforted by the fact that he was home and his family safe.
KEW note: It's so rare to see McGee's take on the team's (mis)adventures in Somalia, and the author's done a brilliant job here.
"A Promise You Don't Have to Keep" by Kira (bloodyfandom)
[NC-17, Gibbs/Tony, ~4,100 words]
Summary: “Breathe.” “I am breathing,” Gibbs grumbles. “Good. Keep focusing on that.”
KEW note: This piece strikes just the right note of awkwardness.
"Thicker Than Water" by keladryevangelinerhysenn (senn815) *NOW COMPLETE
[PG-13, Tali, Ziva, Ari, pre-series, ~25,000 words]
Summary: I baked cookies while my sister was hanging out of the side of a helicopter with a machine gun in hand and while my brother launched missiles at me from Palestine. I watched as my father slowly destroyed my family as well as our lives.
KEW note: I like the idea that when Ziva said that Tali was "the best of us" it was because she was the rebellious one who didn't keep to the Mossad way.
"a river of tears washed us here, we're right where we belong" by hondagirll
[Bones, G, Angela/Hodgins, set post 5x22 "The Beginning in the End", ~350 words}
Quote: The thing is, Jack wasn’t expecting to like Paris as much as he does.
KEW: I love the theme of exceeding expectations.

Summary: "Does it hurt?" She asked him, her living green eyes meeting his dead ones. "Being dead, I mean." He smiled a little, his eyes far away, and before he could answer, he slipped away, his glowing outline melting into the air.
KEW note: Chapter 5 added. Nice McGee-centric chapter.
"In Transit" by jelenamichel (jelenamichel ) *UPDATED

Summary: An investigation takes the team to Pearl Harbor as Tony and Ziva try to navigate their 'relationship', Gibbs tries to look the other way, and McGee tries to get a clue.

"Steal My Breath Away" by colorguard28 (colorguard28) *UPDATED
[PG-13, Tony/McGee, set in the same universe as "Razor's Edge"]
Summary: Somebody close to the team is kidnapped hours before a big storm rolls into D.C. When they discover the crime has its roots in the the past, how will that affect the case?

"Half a World Away" by Squinttoyou *UPDATED
[Bones, PG-13, Booth/Brennan, set post 5x22 "The Beginning in the End"]
Summary: The world is a big place, but it's not that hard to stay in touch.
KEW note: Chapters 46-49 added. I like how Booth and Brennan are stuck in this rut where through their letters something fundamental in their relationship has changed, but because they're so far apart they can't resolve the change. The reader can feel their frustration.
"Topsy Turvy" by Bob Rhynoplasty (bobrhynoplasty) *UPDATED
[PG-13, Tony, Gibbs, pre-series, sequel to "Slaughter House"]
Author's Summary: Tony knew that he would meet Gibbs again, he just hoped it would be under better circumstances...
